The College of Arts and Sciences wants to hear from you! Below are suggested guidelines for writing an effective class note. Relevant events include: Professional accomplishments Educational accomplishments Engagements and marriages Births and adoptions
For Professional Accomplishments: Internship: “Steve Day ’09 is interning at the Washington Post as a graphic designer.” Promotion or Job Change: “William Walker ’83 has joined the Smith Brothers Realty Corporation in New York City as senior vice president. William has been married to his wife, Mary, for 18 years and has three children.” Award or Recognition: “Jaret Davis A.B. ’96, J.D. 99, was honored during the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s 2013 South Florida Distinguished Young Leader Awards.” Notable Achievement: “Martha Mora, A.B. ’00, has been appointed as Commissioner of the Hispanic National Bar Association’s (HNBA) Latina Commission. The appointment is effective for one year ending at the HBNA Annual Convention on Boston, Massachusetts in September 2015.” For Educational Accomplishments: Postgraduate Degree: “Dana Litt B.A. ’04, received her Ph.D. in applied social psychology from the George Washington University in 2010. She is now an assistant professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. She is the recipient of several NIH extramural grants in the area of alcohol and risky behavior among adolescents and young adults.” Fellowship or Notable Scholarship: “William Meyer B.S. ’98, a doctoral candidate in anthropology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, has been granted a Fulbright Fellowship for the 2009-2010 academic year. Mr. Meyer will use this fellowship to conduct dissertation research concerning late Bronze and early Iron Age burial mounds in southern Burgundy (France). Beginning in May 2010, Meyer’s research will also be supported by a grant from the Georges Lurcy Charitable & Educational Trust.” For Marriages and Births: Marriage Example: “John Smith ’03 and Jane Doe ’05 were married in Cleveland, OH on September 4, 2008.” Birth Example:“Lisa M. Lopez A.B. ’97, M.S. ’00, Ph.D. ‘01. And her husband, Luciano Cossi, welcomed a new baby in October 2012.”
Each class note should be limited to a maximum of 250 words. Names of class member(s) should be in bold. Class notes should be written in the third person and should reference the name of the alumnus in the first sentence. When referencing the alumnus, be sure to include the class year and maiden name, if applicable. To include photos: Wedding photos: include the name of bride and groom, date and location of the wedding Social event photos: Include the date, type of event, location of the event and the names of the alumni in the picture Please do not include notes about alumni outside of your class. Also, do not include extended anecdotes about non-alumni spouses or children and grandchildren. News that is less than six months old will get priority over older updates, as will news about alumni. Please note that Class Notes submissions, like all copy for the magazine and departmental newsletters, will be edited for length and clarity
